HOW TO TAKE CARE OF DOG IN SUMMER HEAT?

As the temperatures rise and the sun shines brightly, it's important to take extra precautions to ensure the well-being and safety of your furry friend during the summer months. Dogs are susceptible to heat-related illnesses, such as heatstroke and dehydration, so it's crucial to provide them with proper care and protection to keep them cool and comfortable. In this blog post, we'll explore some essential tips on how to take care of your dog in the summer heat and ensure they stay happy and healthy.

1. Stay Hydrated: Just like humans, dogs need to stay hydrated to prevent dehydration and overheating. Make sure your dog has access to fresh and clean water at all times, especially during hot weather. Bring a portable water bowl and a bottle of water when you're out for a walk or a day trip to keep your furry friend hydrated on the go.

2. Limit Outdoor Activities: Avoid strenuous exercise and outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Opt for early morning or late evening walks when temperatures are cooler and the sun is less intense. Be mindful of hot pavement, sand, or asphalt, as these surfaces can quickly heat up and burn your dog's paws.

3. Provide Shade and Ventilation: Create a shaded and well-ventilated area for your dog to rest and cool off during the day. Set up a canopy, umbrella, or a doghouse in your backyard to provide shade and protection from the sun. Ensure adequate airflow and ventilation to prevent overheating, especially for breeds with thick coats or brachycephalic breeds with flat faces.

4. Never Leave Your Dog in a Parked Car: On a hot day, the temperature inside a parked car can quickly soar to dangerous levels, even with the windows cracked open. Never leave your dog unattended in a parked car, as this can lead to heatstroke and potentially fatal consequences. If you need to run errands, leave your dog at home in a cool and comfortable environment.

5. Use Cooling Products: Consider using cooling products such as cooling mats, vests, bandanas, or portable fans to help your dog stay cool in hot weather. Wetting your dog's paws, belly, or ears with cool water can also help lower their body temperature and provide relief from the heat.

6. Watch for Signs of Heatstroke: Be vigilant for signs of heatstroke in your dog, including excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, and collapse. If you suspect your dog is suffering from heatstroke, move them to a cool and shaded area, offer water to drink, and seek immediate veterinary attention.
